Grimsvötn Volcano

Here we go again, Iceland has begun a new volcano, they say this one seems to be 10 times as powerful as the Eyjafjallajökull volcano last year. We had to see it for ourselves so we packed up my new Pajero Sport aka “Baltasar” and headed east. On our way we got the update that the police had closed the main road in Vík because of a huge ash cloud covering the whole area, so we changed our plan, turned off the main road, through Árnes and finally arrived in the wilderness driving the route through Sprengisandur heading northeast along Vatnajökull. We had blue skies and sun but just a few km away on our right we saw the huge ashcloud, moving closer and eating up the landscape like a black hole in space. I had to shoot timelapses of this weird phenomenon. We took some photos on the 550D, took some more and shot a few timelapses on my 5D Mark II. We then decided to head back south due to the snow increasing and low fuel level. As we headed back Sprengisand we had no chance of escaping the huge ash cloud, so we drove right into it. At first it was interesting, then it became dark, and then it became darker.  We drove further in, it was pitch black. I have never seen blackness like that before, the wind was blowing as well so we could not see 2m from the car. We were basically driving blind on a bad road. Together with a big 38″ Nissan Patrol we drove back in blindness,  having trouble driving...

Testing New Gear

Yesterday I received the rest of the items I ordered online from B&H New York. The 7″ Marshall field monitor and the accessories that come with it, batteries, mounting gear etc. Yesterday I also received the Canon EOS 5D Mark II + 24-105mm f4 L series lens, part as a gift from Nýherji/Sense and part from donations from the public. Big thanks goes to Benedikt Finnbogi for organizing this project, and to Halldór at Nýherji for giving such an enormous discount on the package. Today I tried out my newly ordered Orion Teletrack head with the 5DMarkII mounted on top. With this setup I experimented with paning timelapse here in my backyard in Reykjavik. View some BTS footage along with the result...

New Aluminium Dollies, The v2 & v3

I´m building two new aluminium dollies at the moment with my friends Borgthor and Julius, (much respect and appreciation to them for helping me out by the way!) and of course I´m recording a making of video as the building moves forward, I call the new dollies v2 and v3. The v2 is a 120cm x 68cm platform dolly for a seated operator + tripod and circular motion-able wheel system for the ability to ride on curved track which will most likely be bent pvc piping. So far we´ve welded and built the frame and started on the wheel system. The v3 on the other hand is a much smaller and more mobile piece and mainly made for 1-3 axis motorized timelapse moves, (however real time moves are also possible). We already built the track for it, four 1.5m (track length is 3m in total) rectangle alu frames positioned like diamonds against each other and welded together on 40cm alu pipes. The wheel system is going to be similar as on the v2, but just ride on the outside of the two rectangles so it gets kind of clamped onto the frame for maximum stability, very handy in Iceland´s sometimes windy conditions. We already have the motors for it as well, the dolly engine will be an electric car window dc motor and driven with an omega belt drive, while the pan/tilt head is a motorized Orion telescope mount. The plan is to make the two pieces work together + the interval trigger on the dslr, all commanded by one arduino. I´ll keep recording the process and when we´re...

Upcoming Project and Plans

I´m currently in the pre-production stage of my next project. It is most likely going to be a big one. I´m currently writing a script/skeleton and a location and shot list for it, I´m building together with my friend Julius a 3-axis motorized motion dolly out of aluminium, I´ve taken test flights with an aim on shooting airial footage with the pilot Atli, (another friend of mine) I´ve ordered many new accessories from my favorite store(B&H) both for the NXCAM and the 5D Mark II. Accessories include more batteries for both cameras, a batterygrip, a threestage 75mm bowl aluminium tripod, a smooth Varizoom fluid head with tilt drag, the Canon 50mm F1.8 aka: “plastic fantastic” or “nifty fifty”, a on camera LED light, a few ball heads and soon I´ll order a 7″ monitor that can be powered from the Canon 5D batteries +  accessories. Ps: if anyone owns a Ninja/Samurai from Atomos or a Nanoflash device for recording 1080p 200mbps 4.2.2 colorspace video with a mid level size camcorder, please let me know the advantages, if its worth the cost of the device and how this footage flows in post production. I´m looking at this option because the 24-50mbps (AVCHD and H.264) in camera compression is not so sexy and very power hungry in post production. Comments on this topic are more than welcome! My before mentioned friend Julius found a metal case from his father, a case full of 20 year old retro film lenses and apperantly there is an lens adapter available out there for Canon EOS cameras, would be very interesting if we could use...

Rehabilitation

We moved into the apartment here in Reykjavík. All our furniture is from second hand stores, gifts or borrowed, and everything is in different colors. One word for our crib..awesome. My heavy rehab program still goes on full throttle, I walk strapped in a Locomat robot twice a week, swim and train with physiotherapy five times a week. The daily program goes from 10-16. HERE is a video of me in the “science fiction like” Locomat...

Adapting to Life and Summer Plans

I´m currently in the process of moving out of the rehabilitation center here in Reykjavík, Iceland. I´ve learned all the wheelchair techniques and moves and ready to go. I already found an appartment with Anna, a super nice, bright,  central appartment. According to my physiotherapist I´ve set a record as a fast adapter and learner and broke the record for moving out the soonest. Maybe not the most wanted record to have, but good for a laugh if you´re in this kind of situation. I´ll continue to visit the rehabilitation center every day until spring time, in my freetime until then I´ll start the preproduction stage on my next project. Preproduction for this projcet involves scriptwriting, location scouting and alot of garage work, I need more dollies, a big one to sit on with maybe the ability to ride on curved tracks, and a 3-axis motorized one, my jibcrane needs a few upgrades, and I need to build a mattebox with a railsystem for the Nxcam. The plan is to start shooting in april/may here in Reykjavík and move to the countryside in july and shoot till fall.  More details about this huge project coming soon. There is a group of goodhearted photographers that are currently gathering money to buy me the super insane fullframe Canon EOS 5DmarkII with the 24-105mm F4 L series lens. If this works out(and man I´m hoping) this summer will be epic, filming on the 5DmarkII and the Sony NXCAM. Very exiting indeed and big thumps up and thanks to Benedikt Finnbogi and his friends for their great effort. If you want to make...
